Steve McQueen spent a year at Boys Republic, the reform school in present-day Chino Hills, after his mother and abusive stepfather declared him “incorrigible.”

Incorrigible, perhaps, but not incapable of change. True, he did try to run away a few times, and in a photo of the school’s baseball players, lined up in the bleachers, McQueen’s cracking a sideways grin, shoulders hunched, like the class clown.

But the rebel became a role model who was elected to the school’s rules-setting Boys Council.
