In Tribute to Bruce Brown, California May Soon Offer Endless Summer Inspired License Plates

The Inertia

Surfing took a major hit when Bruce Brown died last December. The sport’s consummate filmmaker had a laundry list of accolades, but The Endless Summerwas Brown’s career-defining hit. And the notion of dropping everything in a fleeting pursuit of perfect waves continues to be most surfers’ raison d’être.

In tribute to Bruce Brown, the Surfing Heritage and Culture Center (SHACC) in San Clemente announced on Saturday an effort to create a special interest license plate featuring the iconic movie poster artwork of Brown’s opus.

“The State of California requires that SHACC submit 7,500 applicants within a one year period before it will approve the plate and proceed with its creation,” explained SHACC in a press release. “SHACC will open a ‘pre-registration’ site in order to gauge interest and gather names for registration when the time comes. The pre-sell will commence after the state agency files a letter of intent with the Department of Motor Vehicles and the proposed license plate is approved by the Department and the California Highway Patrol.”
