Senegal is a Land of Endless Potential for Surf

In 1964, Bruce Brown gave us a glimpse of the potential for surfing in Senegal with The Endless Summer. Decades later, Dakar hosts an up-and-coming surf scene with a number of quality waves.

It’s not difficult to see why the triangle-shaped Cape Verde Penninsula makes for an ideal surfing location. The headland constitutes the westernmost point of the African continent where it’s exposed to both to southern and northern hemisphere swells. Based in Dakar, one can easily access a dozen breaks. Located on the northern side of the headland are a number of exposed beaches as well as the right-hander of N’gor Island, made famous by Mike Hynson and Robert August. The southern side, Les Almadies,  is blessed with a numerous reef breaks and consistent offshore conditions. Regardless of the conditions, the land of “teranga”(hospitality in the native language of Wolouf) will make a visit here worthwhile.
