washingtonpost.com - Mike Hynson, surfer of ‘Endless Summer’ cool, dies at 82
With his sea-slicked hair and pin-striped board, Mr. Hynson embodied the West Coast surfer mystique in the 1966 documentary about seeking the perfect wave.
Mike Hynson, a California surfer whose globe-trotting hunt for the perfect wave in the documentary “The Endless Summer” made him an ambassador of 1960s cool with sea-slicked blond hair and a live-for-the-moment vibe that helped define surf culture, died Jan. 10 at a hospital in Encinitas, California. He was 82.
The death was confirmed by Donna Klaasen Jost, a sister of his longtime partner and co-author of Mr. Hynson’s autobiography, but no cause was noted.
“If you can’t find a good wave, just keep going until you do,” Mr. Hynson said in “The Endless Summer” as he and fellow Southern California surfer Robert August were filmed seeking ideal curls and breaks from South Africa to the South Pacific.
